If all goes well, my look back at the past season will consist of seven posts. And there was no way to shorten my list of the season’s biggest disasters. When I asked a friend to help me narrow down my lists of best performances, she instead convinced me to add more. Don’t get me wrong, it wouldn’t be wrong either way, but it just shows that he has an attitude of a champion.Because it was an Olympic year, everything seemed heightened in 2017-18. Yet, even if he failed to land a perfect jump, he would never use anything like his health (asthma), physical injuries, or program complexity as an excuse. Finally, he is already a double olympic champion and has been on top for so so long, so the way he is so motivated to keep improving, to keep competing, to keep challenging new jumps, perfecting his current jumps makes him something else. Also know that he has the biggest pressure and expectation from external factors (fans, judges, other skaters, media, his country, other countries, his coach, other coaches) and internal factor (himself). Please also keep in mind that many of his jumps are done on painkiller after many severe reinjuries. He uses relatively less amount of strokes to create high speed into and lands with deep beautiful running edges, which altogether create massive height in air and a wide distance of landing.Įven when he knows the standard judges give him is different than what they would have given to other skaters, he still works relentlessly in order to meet that unfair standard. He uses his beautiful knee bend to soften the landing to create an appearance of airiness.

His jumps are executed with a purpose as part of the choreography and his landings are always right on the musical accents. He enters his jumps with the most difficult entries and transitions right back to the program. What makes all of Yuzuru Hanyu’s perfect jumps even more impressive is that he not only uses textbook technique but exceeds what’s required. but they were unreleased footages or recorded by fans. He also landed many other crazy jumps during practice, ice shows, galas…etc. To include every perfect jump landed by him would have been impossible and this video would have been over an hour long. All I now wish for is a healthy Yuzu and a sound 4A at Worlds, so he can consider retiring. Yuzu made costly mistakes in both programs, but were they worth 44 POINTS ? No.

Nathan totally deserved the gold today, no doubt. Who needs to REALLY check those GOE boxes to get +5, if in reality all you need is a clean landing at every competition, different types of quads (well, he has this one already, but apparently not enough for ISU) and, yes, a different passport 🤷‍♀️īefore someone says I'm being a sore loser on Yuzu's behalf, let me add. He skates in his own, idealistic set of rules, that no one else follows. He holds himself to a standard that no one in ISU values anymore. He could have a program that's only made of quads and multiple 3A combinations, but to have the energy to pull that up, he'll have to sacrifice his transitions, spins, beautiful (and difficult) jump entries and exits, or he'll be exhausted/hit by asthma like he was today. One of the reasons Yuzu gets constantly underscored and not only underscored, but RIDICULOUSLY underscored, is because he still tries to skate beautifully and have crisp skating elements, complex technique, musicality, flow - everything the ISU doesn't give a damn about.
